2/10/2016 I really love the Theraspec glasses, but I really hated having to wear two pair of glasses. So I contacted Theraspecs and asked if I could return the “over the glasses” theraspecs and get prescription glasses made! So I had to send in my indoor tinted glasses and use the outdoor ones for a little while which were very dark inside, but I only used them when I needed them. At any rate, I finally got my prescription Theraspecs lenses inside my cheap ole frames from Zenni Optical. And I love them! It is so great to just have one pair of glasses to wear during the day and on cloudy days they are good for outside too.
I have had 2 1/2 days without migraine pain since January 1st. So for 13 out of the past 15 days, this is what I look like…
I have showered 3 times in those 2 weeks, brushed my teeth a few time (brushing hair or teeth causes more pain than I am willing to allow on top of the migraine pain). I change my underwear if I remember and never wear a bra. This is my reality!!! And the reality for many others who suffer from Chronic Illness.
But today is our 16th Wedding Anniversary and I was having nothing to do with it, I am so over the pain. So I called my doctor and asked if I could take the migraine cocktail at home even though I have used the meds as much as I should this week. He gave me the go ahead. After about a half an hour the pain is much reduced and I am determined to enjoy our night.

And so now we can go celebrate. Plus all my boys brought me home a new plant. It should be a good evening!!
In a previous post I thought that the burst of energy might be a precursor to a migraine, because that seemed to have happened before the previous two migraines. But this time it wasn’t the case. which is good news for me really. I have had three days in a row with functional head pain and lots of energy. In fact I was up until 4:30am last night and awake at 7:30am…no nap!! This is a big deal. I am a bit tired, but my head won’t calm down…I feel like the energizer bunny, hence the Migraine Cave being created in the matter of 3 days.
Things that have changed in the past 3 days:
- The new glasses: Theraspecs Website. I have been wearing them at all times both inside and outside.
- I have stayed well hydrated (which was very helpful when I got a blood draw for allergy testing today).
- I have not spent all day in bed. I have been out and about, visiting with friends, shopping, etc. It has been a good 3 days.
I have also been watching the barometric pressure and feel spikes in my head pain when the pressure changes. But so far it hasn’t gone into a full blown migraine or a debilitating NDPH. There have been moments throughout all three days where the pain spikes for a half an hour or an hour here and there but I can almost always trace it to a drop in Barometric pressure.

My mom also found a great app for my phone that allows me to track 48 hours of Barometric pressure. It is called Pressur but you can do a search for Barometric pressure and it should come up. I paid the $1.98 to upgrade so that I do have the 48hrs. The free one comes with a 12 graph.
I suffer from three different types of headaches so there hasn’t been a day since January 21 of 2015 that I have had without head pain. However during that time I have kept a headache journal both for long-term disability reasons and because my doctors have asked too. I track my pain level at 4 points during the day, any abortive medications (like Toradol, Bendryl, Zofran, Robaxon) I have had to take to help with pain and what activities I was doing that day that may have contributed my head pain that day. This has been the most valuable part in creating my migraine tool box.
What is a Migraine Toolbox? It is being prepared for every type of head pain that could happen. It is knowing what medications will be beneficial and at what level of pain. It is researching what other migraneurs have in their toolbox.
My toolbox contains:
1. Preventative medications: I have tried so many and have had so many different reactions. My goal is to have that list of medications and reactions as part of my toolbox.
2. Abortive medications: these are for pain control in the midst of a headache/migraine and these too keep changing. I have tried many and very few work. But for now I have Toradol IM injections, Robaxon, Benedryl in pill form and Zofran for the nausea. I have also recently discovered Prednisone as the ultimate abortive medication but I can only take it sparingly.
3. Comfort items: it’s heat only for me so having microwaveable rice bags is very important. I often keep a crock pot in my bedroom for the worst days so I can simply rotate as needed. I also have an electric heating pad that is very helpful when I cannot get out of bed. I try to keep water at my bedside and am currently looking at putting a mini fridge in my room: see migraine cave. I also have ear plugs, my Theraspec glasses, injection supplies and a weeks worth of medication at my bedside. Oh yah and who could forget chocolate!!!
4. Creating a migraine cave: a place I can go that is dark, quiet and has everything I need when I have to hunker down for 72 hours. Currently I have sheets on my Windows but I want to replace them with Darkening blinds. Instead of the crock pot for heating rice bags I would like to get a mini microwave. I would also like to get a mini fridge so that I have a supply of water, ensure and other items that would keep in a fridge like cheese sticks etc. I have a fully functioning migraine cave but I would like a few upgrades.
5. Family and friends: on speed dial! For two reasons. I need to be able to call up someone when Dan has to take me to the hospital and know that someone on my list could watch the kids. But more importantly I need that family and friend list because they are my support system. They are who I call or text when I need support and they text or call me when they need support or just know that I do. I couldn’t have made it through this last year without any of you.
So if you suffer from migraines or any other chronic illness a toolbox is important to build for yourself so that you are always prepared or at least as prepared as you can be. And a journal is the best way to figure out what you need in your toolbox. I have also found that I now have a better understanding of what’s coming. For example; Friday night I started to get very irritable and a small pain started over my right eye. I knew at that point that I was in for a 72 hr migraine which will be followed by postdrome ( migraine hangover) which has begun and will continue through tomorrow. Knowing this ahead of time allows me to cancel any apts/dates I have made, I know I can’t drive during those 72hrs so Dan will have to run any errands or drop off/pick up kids. I knew all of this Friday night, which gives me a little bit of an upper hand. It does not however change the course of the migraine it just helps me know what to expect.
After much deliberation, I decided to get a pair of glasses specifically designed for migraine sufferers. And I got them today 😀. I could have definitely used them over the passed 72 hours during one of the worst migraine I have had. Three days in bed will be fun to recover from.
But I digress. I got glasses for indoor and outdoor. I had to buy the ones for over prescription glasses so they are not cute and a bit bulky but I am hoping it will help with screen time specifically. But also to be in the living room with natural light as well. I look forward to trying both the indoor and outdoor glasses. I am also curious to see if wearing them during my baseline New Daily Persistent Headaches (NDPH) will reduce eye pain.
